In Memory of Dr. Alessandro Bruschettini

Friend, patron and lover of the arts

The Friends of the Museum for Islamic Art in the Pergamonmuseum e.V. and the Museum for Islamic Art bid farewell to Dr. Alessandro Bruschettini. He passed away at the age of 82 on 5 May 2021.

Alessandro Bruschettini was a long-time friend and always supported the museum as well as the Friends of the Museum for Islamic Art e.V.

He discovered his love of art at a young age. The library in Genoa nourished his interest in arts, especially those of the Near, Middle and Far East. Early trips to Egypt, Iran or Iraq are among the key moments of his life.

Study, see, collect. These parameters, as well as his great love of discovery and an inherent intuition, made him one of the most important private collectors of Islamic art of the 13th-17th centuries. He made his first purchase in 1962, when he was just 23 years old. Today, his exquisite collection includes carpets, textiles, Iznik ceramics, book art, paintings, metals and much more.

With the aim of preserving his art collection and making it accessible to a worldwide public, he transferred it to the Bruschettini Foundation for Islamic and Asian Art in Genoa, Italy, in 2012.

The Museum for Islamic Art owes much to his generosity and unwavering commitment to preserving, communicating and exhibiting art. His donations, such as the complementary 17th century floral carpet fragment, enrich the Berlin collection. Publications or exhibitions that shed light on cultural exchange and promote dialogue would not have been feasible without his support.

Alessandor Bruschetti was a quiet and reserved person, but his enthusiasm and drive were unstoppable until the end.

With him, the international art world loses a generous friend, connoisseur and lover of the arts who - in addition to his wonderful works of art - leaves a big gap.
