Tandem-Sofa // Behind the scenes of the exhibition Mamluks 1250-1517
30 June 2025
Dear friends of the Museum for Islamic Art, dear guests,
We cordially invite you to our seventh Tandem Sofa on 30 June 2025 at 6pm.
How does a major international exhibition come together? What stories can centuries-old objects tell, and how can they engage a modern audience?
Dr Carine Juvin, an esteemed curator in the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre in Paris, invites us to join her in creating “Mamluks 1250–1517”, the first European exhibition dedicated to this remarkable yet frequently overlooked period in Islamic history. Juvin curated the show, bringing together 258 exceptional works from over 40 international collections. The exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the Mamluk era, showcasing many objects that have never been seen by the public before. Co-produced with the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the exhibition will travel there following its Paris showing, opening from September 2025 to January 2026.
In conversation with Dr Miriam Kühn, curator at the Museum for Islamic Art in Berlin, Carine Juvin will share unique insights into the curatorial process. How are such complex exhibitions conceived and realised? How does one coordinate with dozens of lending institutions? And how can cutting-edge scholarship be made accessible to a wide audience?
Miriam Kühn, who oversaw the loans from Berlin for this exhibition, will talk about what’s involved on the lender’s side and how this process becomes all the more complex when a museum is undergoing renovation.
