Special guided tour "Winning the heart of the Orient!"

07 January 2024

Dear friends of the Museum for Islamic Art,

We would like to invite you to an exclusive curator's tour of the Spandau Citadel on January 7, 2024 from 1:30 pm. The cultural-historical exhibition "Winning the Heart of the Orient! Armenians, Yezidis and Kurds with Karl May and how they see themselves", curated by Dr. Thomas Kramer.

Karl May (1842-1912) is still the most successful German-language writer. His complete works ("Winnetou", "Through the Desert" and many more) comprise well over 100 million books, which have been translated into more than 40 languages and made into films.
Against the backdrop of current developments, the exhibition puts the topicality of his Oriental tales up for discussion. Armenian, Yezidi and Kurdish teams are designing their own exhibition chapters. For the first time ever, the reality of life of the people described by May will be portrayed by today's communities using spectacular exhibits, some of which have never been shown before.

Curator Dr. Thomas Kramer will guide us through the exhibition on 7 January 2024 from 13:30.

He is a private lecturer at the Institute for German Literature at Humboldt University Berlin, habilitated in 2001 with a thesis on modern German literature and has dealt extensively with Karl May and other authors and their images of the Orient in his research and publications.

As usual, the number of participants is limited, first come, first served. Admission to the Karl May exhibition and guided tour are free of charge. Binding registration by 23.12.2023 at f.kabelitz@smb.spk-berlin.de is required. You will then receive a confirmation email with all further details.
